1,300 PHOTOS-Capturing memories…..Digital camera or 35 mm film???

DIGITAL CREATIVITY Would you love to be the one who invented the camera.  Instead of the sound of the shutter going “click”….your bank account would make the sound “Cha-Ching!!”Well anyways, memories are happening each and everyday.
Which is your preference, in regards to cameras?
Digital camera or 35mm film formatted camera.

Both camera formats have their place.
I was hard pressed to switch to digital.
I shot with a 35mm Canon Elan 7, film formated camera for about 7 years.
Short of cutting my arm off….you would not see me using a digital.

That’s all changed now, and we will get to that after.
There is magic that happens in a dark room.
From the sound of the camera’s shutter going click, to being in a jet black closet taking the film out of its canister…..to the smell of all the dark room chemicals.
That was it, and I was hooked!

There is such a creative triumph to the whole process of hand developing a photo of a subject that was of interest.
As the photo paper goes into on chemical bath to the next, I will never forget getting to see my image come to life.
I desperately wanted a darkroom at home, and I was even given equipment…..however it was best that it did not happen or…….the next time I came out of the darkroom my daughter probably would of be grown up and living somewhere else.

Time.
 It is all about time.
Hence, the reason why there is a place for digital cameras and digital photography.
The technology, today, is absolutely amazing.

My arm was twisted by a fellow friend photographer.
He lent me his Canon Rebel digital camera.
I played with it for 2 months.
 I was swayed.

These days my camera, of choice, is a Canon digital 5D.

It shoots 3 frames a second and has so many bells and whistles that how could you not be able to take a decent photo.
 It doesn’t end there, though.
High end quality photos require a very good lense.
 Spend the money.
 You WILL NOT regret it.

The darkroom that I have now does not smell.
It is all done now on my MacBook Pro Apple Laptop, and Adobe Photo Shop.Is it quicker?
 Does it save time?
Yes and no.

The advantage of using a digital camera versus a 35mm film formatted camera is that you can keep shooting.
Shoot, Shoot and shoot some more.
The best part is that you can delete the photos that did not come out the way you wanted.
I am finding that that feature is great, however if you like to shoot a lot it is a good idea to be organized.

What are the slight difference between the mediums?
Both digital photography and 35mm film photography have their place.

Having experienced both what I can add is that film definitely has a richness of depth of colors that have a different look and feel than digital photography.
However, a sophisticated digital camera offers many settings, including color adjustment settings…right at you fingertips.

An excellent advantage, if you do traveling, is when you are at the airport.
Traveling to Spain, I had purchased professional film and it was a chore having the 60 rolls hand inspected by TSA.
With the strong xray machines, available today, you do not have to worry so much about the affects other that.

Digital or Film?
Whatever photography medium you choose is up to you, and is it not a great thing that there are so many creative options?
Absolutely!
Capturing memories, good times with friends and making a recorded history of what life is all about is a fantastic thing.
All of this came about with the thought.

Thoughts are powerful tools to things, and goals that do not exist at this moment in time.
Myself personally am grateful for the first camera; digital or 35mm film camera ever being invented.

Think it. Make it. Just do it!

  1. It’s funny how we darkroom rats all talk about the excitement of images coming to life in trays! I absolutely love it. I’m a diehard film user, not that I have anything against digital, it’s just different. I prefer the slow, stinky, hand made method-it’s more, well, hands on oddly enough. I don’t shoot 35mm as much since I started shooting medium format, but still it’s film. My main distrust of digital is its longevity issues. I have several 50+ year old cameras that require nothing more than a roll of film and a willing shutter clicker (that would be me), I don’t even need batteries in them. Simple, uncomplicated, still working and relevant. I like to play with new gadgets and whiz-bangs, but I won’t jump on the digital bandwagon. But it’s all good.

  4. I stress, for a SNAPSHOT camera, this is a great camera. It is absolutely no replacement for a quality DSLR. The DPI difference between the 2 is extreme. My Nikon D70 has 300 DPI, my SP-570U has 72 DPI.
